For some everyday life is a 9 to 5 job and to some it's living with Leonard Cohen and Marianne in a Greek Isle among many neighbors and personalities who round out life without becoming one dimensional background characters. Well written -it flows- this is one of those stories that had nothing to do with me and yet parts of it seemed familiar. If you had a very good friend for years and one night over wine you got to talking about your respective pasts before meeting, this is the sort of tale you might hear. I do take exception to one part, though. About her memories she says, "It leaves you feeling like, I may not be all that much myself, but I was once a good friend and confidante of an exceptional once-in-a-century man. And he cared for me and remembered me over all the years." If she were 'not all that much' none of this tale would have happened. The world is full of many good stories -this is one of them. Really enjoyed this book. I could imagine the heat and the long walks uphill as I was reading. For a few days I felt as though I was on this island too. A great summer read for me.
