Ebook About
A couple facing the dreaded empty nest realize they need to rediscover who they are. This is an adventure story about a voyage from one life chapter to another that involves a too-big sailboat, a narrow and unknown sea, and an appetite to witness a mythical blonde bear that inhabits a remote rainforest.Kim Brown Seely and her husband had been damn good parents for more than 20 years. That was coming to an end as their youngest son was about to move across the country. The economy was in freefall and their jobs stagnant, so they impulsively decided to buy a big broken sailboat, learn how to sail it, and head up through the Salish Sea and the Inside Passage to an expanse of untamed wilderness in search of the elusive blonde Kermode bear that only lives in a secluded Northwest forest. Theirs was a voyage of discovery into who they were as individuals and as a couple at an axial moment in their lives. Wise and lyrical, this heartfelt memoir unfolds amid the stunningly wild archipelago on the far edge of the continent.A 2020 North American Travel Journalists Association Silver Award

Book Uncharted: A Couple's Epic Empty-Nest Adventure Sailing from One Life to Another Review :

This memoir is so beautifully written that I just couldn’t put it down until the last page turned. Ostensibly, it’s an adventure story about sailing to find a rare white spirit bear, and the journey is exciting with lovely and insightful prose descriptions of the ocean and coastal wilderness. On a deeper level, the book is about the personal growth and self-discovery of a husband & wife as their identity shifts from being fully-consumed Mom & Dad to being fully-realized, liberated, creative human beings after the kids are gone.Love abounds in this close family, and it’s very painful for Kim and Jeff when their sons depart for college without looking back. There’s a lot of wisdom in here about processing through loss that will be helpful for anyone grieving loss of any type. Kim wrote this memoir, but it’s just as much Jeff’s memoir as hers.Structurally, the book is a mostly linear narrative of a sailboat journey up the gorgeous Canadian West Coast (British Columbia). The prose descriptions of nature are so lovely — clearly Kim is a very talented writer. Interludes are expertly crafted to explore inner thoughts about life, loss, happiness, finding meaning, relationships, love, and even the harmful effects of unchecked capitalism on the environment and First Nations people. It’s all done in a touching and often humorous way.I like a book that not only entertains me, but makes me think and helps me grow, and this one succeeds at all three. I enjoyed it so much that I purchased additional copies for a friend and a family member. Book groups will love the conversation it stimulates! Great read for both men and women!
I seldom pace myself while reading a book. But I rationed my intake of Ms. Seely’s spellbinding narrative “Uncharted” in hopes it would never end.Full disclosure: parallels of our life journeys may have swayed me. But I can’t imagine anyone with a sense of adventure, treasured relationships and a love of this precious planet who would not be enchanted by “Uncharted.” Sailors will find it particularly compelling. I found myself at first tracking her travels on Google Maps but quickly downloaded relevant charts from iNavX / Navionics to follow her course more precisely.Ms. Seely’s deft and evocative style reflects her decades as a gifted travel writer and editor. You breathe her same air. You hear the cries of the ospreys soaring overhead. You feel the chill spray of the Pacific as the boat heels. You sit motionless beside her waiting for a glimpse of the great Spirit Bear. The book interweaves tales of adventure, romantic love, and maternal devotion with grace, humor and wonder at the world’s gifts. A passage I particularly liked:“There is both beauty and darkness in nature. And in life. The poles of existence. It’s bittersweet, the reality of the passage of time. Don’t worry so much about what’s going to happen because it’s out of your control anyway. Listen. Have faith. Feel.”Ms. Seely captures the heady exhilaration of sailing with her soulmate far from land and its responsibilities. She captures equally vividly the strain of spending so much time with one person when the inevitable challenges arise at sea.As an empty-nester who also fell in love with bare boating relatively late, I long to sail the same Pacific waters for many of the same reasons as Ms. Seely. Unfortunately, I don’t have the guts to go so far north but, thanks to her excellent book, my husband and I are already plotting a tamer course off Canada’s shores.
